Colin R. Wright

Colin Wright is a freelance musician, teacher and examiner currently Lecturer in Music on the staff at Hull University. He has held appointments as Assistant Organist at Beverley Minster since 1996 and on the Music Panel of Examiners of Trinity Guildhall since 1999.

Originally from West Middlesex, Colin won an organ scholarship to St Catherine’s College, Cambridge in 1964 where he studied organ and choral practice under Dr Peter Le Huray, later gaining the award of Fellowship to the Royal College of Organists.

Colin has lived in the East Riding since 1974 and has built a well-established reputation as an active practising musician. For many years he has been involved in a wide variety of musical activities as organ recitalist, piano or organ accompanist, with frequent appearances in concert, as well as conductor, and as organist at innumerable church services across the area alongside his work as lecturer/teacher and examiner in music.

He has been accompanist to the East Riding County Choir since 1991 and to the Hull Choral Union for the past twelve years. He is Deputy Conductor to the two choirs and participates regularly in concerts for both societies in Hull and the surrounding area. He is also frequently engaged in performance with a number of other local organisations including the Melsa Consort and the Hull Bach Choir.

Colin has recorded two CDs of organ music at Beverley Minster; the most recent entitled ‘English Concert Music’ which features several works by composers associated with the region. He is currently engaged in research into aural perception as part of a proposed Ph.D thesis. His examining role continues to include tours in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand as well as the UK.

Written shortly after Aida (1871), Verdi's Requiem is theatrical in style and was described by Brahms as "...a work of genius."

This performance marks the debut of the new Director of Hull Choral Union.
