Nelson MassNelson Mass

Thursday, 10th April 2014, 7.30
Hull City Hall

featuring Hull Choral Union Orchestra

Haydn:   Nelson Mass

Written when the composer was at the peak of his powers, this was originally entitled "A Mass for Troubled Times". The piece was first performed at the time Lord Nelson defeated the French at the Battle of the Nile. The work has flashes of the sound world of Mozart's Requiem and the drama of Don Giovanni and its militaristic feel is highly unusual for a mass setting.
.

Bach:    Magnificat In D

This highly dramatic work was originally written for a Christmas service while Bach was Kantor of St. Thomas, Leipzig. Its splendour and grandeur of five choral parts, four soloists and an unusually large orchestration places the work as a forerunner to the choruses of his great Mass in B minor.

The soloists for these two works are Sarah Helsby-Hughes - soprano, Hannah Mason - mezzo soprano, Nicholas Sales - tenor and John Cunningham- bass. Sam Gardner, conductor, will give a pre-concert talk at 6.45 p.m.

Bach:  Orchestral suite No 3 in D

In its 'solo' spot Hull Choral Union's orchestra features this very exciting five-movement piece. The second movement, the Air, is one of the most famous pieces of baroque music - an arrangement of it is known as 'Air on the G string' , well-known on television in the 1970s as the theme tune for a certain cigar advertisement.

TICKETS £15 - concessions are available, including Accompanied School Children £1, Students £1, Family Ticket £25. Available from Hull Choral Union Members or City Hall Box Office: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tel: 01482 300300

Christmas Music including Britten's A Ceremony of Carols
With HCU Junior Chorus
Guests: Yorkshire Young Musicians

Britten wrote his famous A Ceremony of Carols on
a boat crossing the Atlantic in 1942, at the height
of the 2nd World War. The texts were inspired by
The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, a collection
of medieval texts he found while in Nova Scotia.
The work treats the listener to a wide variety of
styles, from chant to angular haunting modern
melodies. The text depicts the baby Jesus, Adam
and Eve and triumph over evil and the setting of
the accompaniment, using solo harp, paints vivid
pictures of bells, fluttering birds and the freezing
winter wind.

Come and join us to sing traditional Christmas
Carols and maybe discover some new ones!
