Martin Hindmarsh
Martin Hindmarsh took over as Conductor/Chorus Master of the Hull Choral Union in 2002 following the retirement of Alan Spedding. Martin graduated from Birmingham University with a first class degree in Music and went on to take a Master's degree in Opera Studies. For a number of years he sang with the BBC Northern Singers. His solo career in opera and on the concert platform includes a wide range of roles and he gave the first broadcast performance of David Gow’s Cantata for Tenor, Choir and Piano. He also gave the first performance of John Joubert’s On Offa’s Back. He performs regularly in Bayreuth at the annual Wagner Festival. As a recitalist, Martin specialises in English Song.
Martin is both composer and arranger; his own works including songs, carols, a setting of Psalm 150 and The Isle is Full of Noises, a setting of words from The Tempest.
His wide conducting experience includes orchestral as well as choral music and he was Founder/Director of Cantico. He served as Musical Director of South Yorkshire Opera and was Chorus Master of the BBC Northern/Britten Singers.
Martin lectured in music at the University of Sheffield for over 30 years. He directed the choirs and orchestras, and for the last few years was the Director of Performance. Now a totally freelance musician, Martin is pursuing his conducting and singing activities countrywide from his new home in Surrey and hopefully spending a little more time with his family.
He has recently been appointed musical director of Maidstone Choral Union.
